BAPHUON STYLE
Perpetuating stillness within the chaos, Buddha sanctifies the true essence of meditation.
At the very root of humanity’s evolving existence there’s been a solid addictive quality wired within each of us, the addiction to distraction. Deeper still, this dominating distraction is a self-sabotaging depletion.
If you examine Buddha closely, any & all distractions are non-existent. He maintains stillness within the chaos of life, exhibiting the true essence of meditation.
The Naga are the hood of snakes hovering above him. They are not to harm or distract but rather faithfully protect the awakened one by the king of serpents. In Khmer culture, Naga is the Sanskrit word for any deity taking the form of a great snake, specifically the multi-headed king cobra.
Buddha is holding the Dhyana mudra with deep intentional reverence. Mudras offer energetic messages through hand placement and significant ritual amongst the Khmer culture. Sometimes called the yoga mudra or samadhi mudra, this mudra represents the gesture of true balance. Someone using this mudra during meditation is immersed in a limitless space, completely untouched by the outside world. The right hand symbolizes wisdom and awareness while the left symbolizes the illusion of existence. This mudra is created with the help of two hands placed on the lap, the right on the left with stretched fingers, thumbs facing upwards and all of the other fingers resting on each other. This mudra is gentle yet stable, humble and worthy.
Naga Buddha statues are considered one of the rarest Buddhist artifacts around the globe. Therefore, many Buddhist and antique art collectors consider the Naga Buddha statues as the gems of their personal collections. There is a rich and ancient wisdom found in this piece of art. The Khmer artist inspires the world so beautifully here: Buddha demonstrates a state of elated solitude, allowing the observer to become curious about his or her own path towards self-discovery.
