MEDiTATiNG ViSHNU
12TH CENTURY
ANGKOR WAT STYLE
Previously mentioned, Vishnu is part of the Trimurti, the Divine Trinity.
Vishnu’s posture offers a pristine adeptness, this art piece provides us with an opportunity to trust and discover TRUTH. Here the Khmer artist demonstrates the Bhumisparsha mudra with focused attention on Vishnu’s intention to attain enlightenment.
Mudras were often incorporated into Khmer sculptings, for they themselves are works of hand healing art. Mudra is a Sanskrit word that means to “seal” or “gesture.” Most importantly, mudras benefit the mind and body by helping clear out the energy channels, also known as nadis.
The Bhumisparsha Mudra, more commonly known as the ‘earth touching’ mudra is formed with all five fingers of one hand placed upon the same knee in an earth-pressing mudra, complemented by the other hand held flat in the lap, turned up in a cup-like position. This mudra is used in meditation to help discover realizations of conventional and ultimate truths. More powerfully, it assists in the process of self-transformation. Transmuting the forceful delusion of what we call anger into mirror-like wisdom is an ideal metamorphosis that the Bhumisparsha mudra helps awaken.
